CAF Doubles Prize Money for African Clubs Competing in Continental Tournaments

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Monday, July 7, a significant increase in the financial rewards granted to clubs participating in the CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup. The move aims to boost the competitiveness of African football and provide stronger financial support to the teams involved in these major tournaments.

According to an official statement from the continental body, each club qualifying for either of the two competitions will now receive a prize of $100,000 — double the amount allocated in previous seasons, where the prize stood at $50,000.

The decision was unveiled by CAF President Patrice Motsepe during the Executive Committee meeting held on Saturday, July 5, in Rabat, the capital of the Kingdom of Morocco.

Motsepe emphasized that this financial boost reflects CAF’s commitment to creating a more favorable environment for African clubs and to easing the financial burdens they face during their continental campaigns. He also noted that CAF is actively working to secure additional financial resources to further the development of football across the continent.

In this regard, the CAF president revealed that advanced negotiations are underway with international marketing agencies to finalize long-term partnership agreements valued at up to $1 billion over an eight-year period. These funds would be primarily allocated to infrastructure development, youth training, and the professionalization of African football.

This announcement comes as Morocco hosts the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for the second consecutive time. The competition, which began recently, will run until July 26 across six stadiums located in Rabat, Casablanca, Mohammedia, El Jadida, Oujda, and Berkane — a powerful symbol of both Morocco’s and CAF’s commitment to the growth of African football, for both men and women.
