Josep Borrell reaffirms the “immense value” that the EU places on the strategic partnership with Morocco

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, once again highlighted the crucial importance of the Strategic Partnership between the European Union and Morocco. During a press conference held in Luxembourg on Monday, following the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Borrell emphasized the “immense value” that the 27 EU Member States attach to this relationship.
A Long-Standing and Trust-Based Partnership “The partnership between Morocco and the EU is not only long-lasting but has spanned several decades, with remarkable depth and density,” stated Borrell. This relationship, built on strong historical ties, has expanded into a multidimensional cooperation covering various strategic sectors. From the economy to security, agriculture, and fisheries, the EU and Morocco have forged a trust-based partnership essential to the stability and prosperity of both sides of the Mediterranean.
A Renewed Commitment The head of European diplomacy reiterated the EU’s commitment to preserving and strengthening this relationship, in line with the fundamental principle of international cooperation: “pacta sunt servanda.” This commitment, also supported by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, reflects the European institutions’ determination to continue working closely with Morocco. Borrell assured that the 27 EU countries agree on the importance of safeguarding and developing this partnership, which extends well beyond just commercial and agricultural issues.
A Model of Euro-Mediterranean Cooperation The relations between Morocco and the EU are often cited as a model of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, an example for other countries in the region. The density of exchanges and the quality of dialogues between the two parties reflect a dynamic partnership, constantly evolving to adapt to contemporary challenges. By strengthening this bond, Morocco and the EU aim to tackle global challenges such as migration, climate change, and energy security together.
Towards a New Phase of Cooperation Looking ahead, the European Union and Morocco plan to further deepen their economic relations while continuing to strengthen cooperation in the fields of security and regional governance. This partnership is also vital for the development of infrastructure and the promotion of renewable energy, areas in which Morocco is emerging as a global leader.
Josep Borrell’s reaffirmation underscores Morocco’s central role in the EU’s foreign policy and the privileged position the Kingdom holds in the European geopolitical landscape. As a reliable and strategic partner, Morocco stands out for its commitment to peace, regional stability, and sustainable development.
