Respect for Territorial Integrity of Nations, Essential to Address Euro-Mediterranean Challenges – Morocco’s Lower House Speaker

Granada – Respect for the territorial integrity of nations, international law, and global commitments is essential to resolving conflicts and tackling the challenges facing the Euro-Mediterranean region, stated the Speaker of Morocco’s House of Representatives Rachid Talbi El Alami on Friday in Granada.

Speaking at the closing session of an international forum on the future of the Mediterranean, organized as part of Spain’s presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM), Talbi El Alami called for upholding the national unity of states and safeguarding their territorial integrity.

“As a parliamentary assembly, we must adopt strong positions, without complacency, regarding what constitutes the foundation of international relations and international law—the territorial unity and integrity of states,” he said, advocating for the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of nations.

He stressed the need to firmly and rigorously address the challenges facing the Euro-Mediterranean region, particularly those related to terrorism, separatist ambitions, attempts to dismantle states and undermine their territorial integrity, climate change, and migration.

“On migration, we must rely on the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration, adopted in December 2018 in Marrakech, and tackle the root causes of irregular migration to manage it in accordance with the laws of each country,” he emphasized.

Regarding climate change, Talbi El Alami called for adherence to commitments made at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

He also stressed that the PA-UfM must take an active role in international efforts for peace, development, and progress, and influence global decisions that promote coexistence, security, development, and fair, balanced partnerships.

Reaffirming the commitment of the House of Representatives—one of the founding members of Euro-Mediterranean governmental, parliamentary, and civil initiatives—to strengthening parliamentary cooperation between countries on both sides of the Mediterranean, Talbi El Alami pointed out that solutions to the problems of the North lie in the South, particularly in Africa, the continent of the future.

“It is crucial to always keep in mind the reality of this emerging continent, rich in natural and human resources, and to work towards reducing disparities between the North and the South,” he noted.
