The Algerian Regime and the Polisario: A Dark Alliance at the Heart of International Terrorism

In a damning revelation recently published by the prestigious American daily The Washington Post, the world is once again confronted with the true face of the Polisario: that of an armed, criminal group deeply rooted in the darkest networks of international terrorism. Even more alarming, the report sheds glaring light on the direct involvement of this faction—pampered and nurtured by the Algerian military regime—in armed networks supported by Iran in Syria.

The facts are crystal clear. According to the report, several Polisario fighters were trained by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and deployed to war zones such as Palmyra and Al-Qusayr. Today, many of them languish in the prisons of the new Syrian government, which is courageously working to dismantle the weapons and drug networks inherited from the Assad regime and its Islamist allies.

Algeria: A Breeding Ground for Terrorism and Instability

What is most shocking and outrageous in these revelations is that the terrorist organization known as the Polisario continues to thrive under the complicit and protective wing of the Algerian state. The military regime in Algiers—whose pathological obsession with Morocco borders on diplomatic insanity—has turned the Polisario into its proxy, its armed wing, its instrument of regional sabotage in pursuit of a foreign policy that is as sterile as it is dangerous.

This is not the first time the Polisario has been implicated in terrorism, arms trafficking, or drug smuggling. But this time, its involvement with Iranian networks and the Lebanese Hezbollah places the Sahrawi group squarely in the same category as radical Shiite militias that have spread death and destruction throughout the Middle East. Captagon factories discovered along the Lebanese-Syrian border—producing a drug used to fund Hezbollah’s militias—and among the traffickers: Polisario operatives, trained, armed, and backed by Tehran.

Algeria’s Cynical Double Game

How can the Algerian regime, which pretends to defend “people’s freedom” and constantly brandishes the right to self-determination at international forums, continue to host, finance, and arm a group now entrenched in the world’s most alarming terrorist circles? The answer is simple: because this dictatorial and closed regime has never sought peace or stability—only confrontation and division.

Algeria has never pursued peace in the Sahara. It has fabricated a geopolitical fiction—the “Polisario”—to undermine Morocco’s territorial integrity and sow chaos in the Maghreb. Today, this Frankenstein’s monster has turned on its creator, embroiled in trafficking that finances global terrorism, further tarnishing the name of a country already discredited by the repression of its people, the corruption of its elites, and the failure of its political model.

The International Community Must Wake Up

It is high time for international institutions—the UN, EU, AU—to put an end to this dangerous ambiguity. An armed group involved in Iranian networks in Syria, allied with Hezbollah, and engaged in transnational drug trafficking can no longer be called a “liberation movement.” The mask has fallen: the Polisario is a terrorist organization, and Algeria is its godmother.
