Spain’s Sanchez Highlights Morocco’s Key Role in Swift Recovery from Power Outage

Madrid - President of the Spanish Government Pedro Sánchez has once again reaffirmed the central role of Morocco in the swift restoration of power to certain regions of Spain, following the massive power outage in the country on April 28.

“It was the combined-cycle power plants and interconnections with France and Morocco, as well as the hydroelectric dams, that helped quickly recovering electricity in the first moments,” Sánchez said before the Congress of Deputies on Wednesday.

According to Madrid authorities, the equivalent of 60% of Spain’s electricity consumption (15 gigawatts), disappeared in the span of five seconds during the blackout, an event described as “unprecedented” by the Government.

In its account of the events, the Spanish electricity grid operator (REE) said it had identified two separate incidents, one and a half seconds apart, as the possible origin of the blackout, one of which may have affected a solar production site in south-west Spain.
