Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: EU Envoy for the Gulf Praises Morocco’s Role in Promoting the Two-State Solution

Rabat, May 20, 2025 – The European Union’s Special Envoy for the Gulf, Luigi Di Maio, praised Morocco’s central role in promoting the two-state solution and reviving the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, during a speech Tuesday in Rabat.

Speaking at the 5th meeting of the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, the former Italian foreign minister expressed his gratitude to the Kingdom of Morocco for its hospitality and for co-organizing the event—described as the “first joint initiative beyond the initial group of co-organizers” of this alliance working toward sustainable peace in the region.

Di Maio commended the active engagement of Morocco and the Netherlands in advancing international consensus around concrete measures to halt the escalation in Gaza and revive negotiations based on the two-state solution.

He also recalled that the Global Alliance was recently mentioned in a UN General Assembly resolution, highlighting its growing relevance on the international diplomatic stage. He called for “concrete actions” in support of Palestinian sovereignty and long-term peace in the Middle East.

The EU envoy emphasized that this Rabat meeting is part of the preparations for the upcoming High-Level Conference on the Two-State Solution, scheduled to take place in June at UN Headquarters in New York, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France.

“We are fully committed to working alongside the Kingdom of Morocco, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and all our partners gathered here,” said Di Maio.

Warning of the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza and the alarming situation in the West Bank, he stressed that these developments seriously threaten the viability of the two-state solution if concrete efforts are not implemented urgently.

The meeting, co-organized by Morocco and the Netherlands, gathered delegations representing over 50 countries and international organizations committed to advancing the two-state solution.
