Morocco–UK Relations: An Alliance Built on Trust, Commitment, and a Shared Vision
The relationship between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United Kingdom is entering a new and promising phase, driven by a mutual desire to deepen bilateral cooperation in key strategic sectors. On Tuesday in Rabat, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Mr. Nasser Bourita, received a high-level British parliamentary delegation led by Mr. Fabian Hamilton, Chair of the British Group at the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
This high-level meeting is part of the dynamic of friendship and cooperation that unites the two Kingdoms—rooted in mutual respect, shared history, and converging interests. In a press statement, Mr. Hamilton expressed his delegation’s enthusiasm about the future of Moroccan-British relations, highlighting “particularly promising opportunities for cooperation in energy, trade, security, and the fight against climate change.”
Beyond these sectoral priorities, the meeting underscored a strategic partnership strengthened by the UK’s position on the Moroccan Sahara. Mr. Hamilton welcomed his government’s clear support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, calling it “serious, credible, and realistic”, and noted that this recognition paves the way for even deeper collaboration between the two nations.
“We are now three of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan,” he emphasized, underlining the growing diplomatic significance of this international recognition.
The British delegation, composed of members of the House of Commons—Mr. Charlie Dewhirst, Ms. Rupa Huq, and Mr. Iqbal Mohammed—as well as members of the House of Lords—Baroness Brown and Baroness Prashar—was also accompanied by several senior civil servants, reflecting the institutional importance the UK places on its relationship with Morocco.
This parliamentary visit, rich in dialogue and exchange, reflects the joint efforts to build an exceptional partnership, grounded in shared values and common interests, amid a rapidly changing global landscape.
In the face of the energy transition, global climate challenges, and regional security concerns, Morocco and the UK are proving their capacity to frame their cooperation with a forward-looking vision focused on stability, prosperity, and peace.
