Strengthening Parliamentary Cooperation at the Heart of Morocco-France Talks in Rabat

Rabat – Talks held on Thursday in Rabat between Yahfadouh Ben-M’barek, Vice President of Morocco’s House of Councillors, and Christian Cambon, President of the France-Morocco Friendship Group in the French Senate, highlighted the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in the parliamentary field.

The meeting emphasized the depth and strength of the historic ties between the two countries, marked by a strong and renewed dynamic under the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and His Excellency French President Emmanuel Macron, according to a statement from the House of Councillors.

Both sides reaffirmed the exceptional nature of the relations between the two nations and their peoples, underlining the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation and expanding it into broader horizons through both bilateral and multilateral partnerships. This includes boosting parliamentary collaboration through the exchange of experiences, expertise, and best practices, strengthening coordination between the two legislative institutions, enhancing legislative work, and advancing cooperation mechanisms and fruitful parliamentary dialogue.

In this context, Mr. Ben-M’barek highlighted the significance of the upcoming session of the Morocco-France Parliamentary Forum, as a multidimensional platform for parliamentary dialogue that reinforces the strategic bilateral partnership and strengthens tools for productive and constructive cooperation.

Regarding the Moroccan Sahara, the Vice President praised the clear and firm stance of the French Republic in supporting the Kingdom of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its southern provinces, and its backing of the autonomy initiative as the only serious and credible solution to the artificial dispute. This, he said, bolsters the legitimacy and credibility of Morocco’s position on the international stage.

He also commended the regular visits by the France-Morocco Friendship Group in the French Senate to various regions and provinces of the Kingdom, noting that such visits offer a firsthand view of Morocco’s comprehensive development progress.

Mr. Ben-M’barek took the opportunity to review the major projects launched under the leadership of His Majesty the King in political, economic, social, and human rights sectors.

For his part, Mr. Cambon reaffirmed the depth and strength of France-Morocco relations, noting that this visit is part of the implementation of new directions outlined during the French President’s state visit to Morocco last year.

He recalled the historic visit by French Senate President Gérard Larcher to the city of Laâyoune, during which France’s consistent position on the Moroccan Sahara was reiterated, reaffirming support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces—now and in the future.

Cambon also noted that the France-Morocco Friendship Group is the largest in the French Senate, reflecting the vitality of bilateral parliamentary cooperation and the shared desire to deepen ties across areas of mutual interest.

He stressed that France and Morocco are called upon to work together to write a new chapter in their bilateral relationship. This visit, he said, aims to lay new foundations for cooperation in vital fields such as the environment, economic development, education, and training.

Cambon expressed hope that the fifth edition of the Morocco-France Parliamentary Forum would take place soon, as it represents a key step forward in strengthening bilateral relations and formalizing regular parliamentary dialogue between the two legislative bodies.

At the regional level, Cambon highlighted Morocco’s important role in promoting peace and security, particularly in the Sahel and across a rapidly transforming African continent that requires a new approach. In this regard, he praised Morocco’s wise diplomacy and constructive role in fostering regional stability.

He affirmed that both countries remain committed to working together for peace and security in the Mediterranean region and the Atlantic Ocean, within a shared vision of a future based on stability, development, and mutual understanding.

The meeting was also attended by Mohamed Zidouh, President of the Morocco-France Friendship Group in the House of Councillors, and Saad Ghazi, Director of External Relations and Communication at the House of Councillors.
