C24: United Arab Emirates Reiterates Support for Autonomy Plan and Morocco’s National Sovereignty
The United Arab Emirates reaffirmed, before the UN’s Special Committee on Decolonization (C24), its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative as “the only basis” for reaching a political solution to the issue of the Sahara that safeguards Morocco’s territorial integrity.

“The State of the United Arab Emirates renews its support for the Autonomy Initiative presented by Morocco in 2007, which the UN Security Council has described as serious and credible,” emphasized Fatema Yusuf, Acting Deputy Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, during the ordinary session of the C24, held from June 9 to 20 in New York.
The diplomat stated that, for her country, the Autonomy Plan is the only basis for reaching a lasting political solution to the issue of the Moroccan Sahara that “is consistent with the United Nations Charter and preserves the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco.”
She further emphasized that her country reaffirms its “full support” for Morocco’s sovereignty over the entire region of the Moroccan Sahara, and strongly commends the ambitious projects implemented by the Kingdom to benefit the populations of the southern provinces and to promote sustainable development in the region.
On the same occasion, the diplomat reiterated her country’s unwavering position in support of Morocco’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and legitimate rights.
She also mentioned the ongoing efforts of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, aimed at reviving the political process under the auspices of the United Nations.
