In Dakhla, an International Call for Ethical Journalism Led by Younes Mjahed

The emblematic city of Dakhla, in the heart of the Moroccan Sahara, played host to a high-level international symposium held under the theme: “The Complementarity Between Quality Journalism and Media Education.” Organized by the Provisional Commission for the Management of Press and Publishing Affairs, the gathering brought together experts and journalists from over twenty countries, offering a valuable platform for collective reflection on the future of journalism in the digital age.

At the forefront of this initiative, widely praised by participants, was Younes Mjahed, president of the Commission, who delivered a strong and clear message in favor of responsible, committed, and rigorous journalism. In a noteworthy address, he warned against the dangers of sensationalism, the spread of fake news, and the normalization of the commercial exploitation of information. According to him, these trends undermine not only the democratic role of the media but also erode citizens’ trust, already shaken by the rapid transformations in the global information landscape.

Speaking with clarity and conviction, Mjahed advocated for journalism grounded in thorough fact-checking and supported by critical media education, which he described as essential to preparing citizens, especially youth, for the complexities of the digital world.

Supported by local authorities and the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, the symposium also highlighted Morocco’s institutional reform efforts: modernizing media laws, restructuring press subsidy mechanisms, and establishing frameworks for the governance of artificial intelligence use. These major initiatives aim to build a sustainable, professional, and ethical media ecosystem.

Finally, the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region, through its vice president Moulay Boutal Lembarki, expressed pride in hosting this international event. The region is steadily becoming a hub of interest for both national and international media, in line with the development momentum of the new Moroccan Sahara.

Through this initiative, Younes Mjahed once again demonstrated his enlightened leadership, his ability to unite around noble values, and his unwavering commitment to a respected, credible Moroccan journalism that serves as an engine for societal change.
