Rocket Fire Near Smara: Algerian Regime and Its Polisario Terrorist Militias Cross a New Red Line
A highly serious act of aggression was committed on Friday by Polisario militias, with the complicit backing of the Algerian regime. Four projectiles were launched from east of the security wall in the Smara region, in southern Morocco, near the area where the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) is stationed. Fortunately, no casualties or material damage were reported. But the message is clear: the armed separatist organization will stop at nothing, and Algeria continues to fuel regional instability through military provocations.

Polisario: A terrorist militia serving Iran and Hezbollah
Behind these attacks is not just a band of mercenaries, but a broader axis of regional subversion: the Algiers–Tehran axis. This strike comes as the United States Congress prepares to review a proposed bill to designate the Polisario as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). A potentially decisive move for justice and global security.
Recent alerts from multiple UN reports and international think tanks, including the Hudson Institute, confirm that Polisario can no longer be treated as a mere political actor. It is, in fact, an armed group with terrorist ties. It receives logistical, ideological, and military support from Iran and uses the Tindouf camps, located on Algerian soil, as a rear base for hostile activities threatening the stability of North Africa as a whole.
The Algerian regime: Patron of dangerous regional terrorism
The real instigator of this escalation is well known: the Algerian military regime, which continues to finance, arm, and shield the Polisario. For decades, Algeria has falsely claimed to be a neutral observer in the Sahara conflict, while in reality it is the main architect of regional destabilization driven by deep-seated hostility toward Morocco.
By providing a safe haven to Polisario militias, arming them with rockets, opaque funding, and diplomatic cover, the Algerian regime endangers not only regional peace but also the interests of major global powers working to curb Iranian and Hezbollah influence in Africa.
Morocco, a pillar of stability, targeted for its diplomatic successes
As the Kingdom of Morocco works toward development, peace, and South-South cooperation, its enemies move in the shadows. While Morocco strengthens its strategic partnership with the United States, expands its footprint across Africa, and positions itself as a key player in regional security, the Algiers–Tehran–Daesh axis is trying to halt this progress through any means — including terrorist acts.
But these cowardly attacks only reinforce Morocco’s legitimacy and standing on the international stage. They expose the violent and outdated nature of the Polisario and the criminal complicity of the Algerian regime, which must now be counted among state sponsors of terrorism.
The moment of truth is near
Morocco will not be intimidated. The Royal Armed Forces responded swiftly after the rocket fire in Smara, joined by the Royal Gendarmerie and Civil Protection, to launch a thorough investigation. The Kingdom will continue to firmly defend its territorial integrity and denounce Algeria’s duplicity.
As for the international community, it can no longer look away. The Polisario’s impunity must end. And the Algerian regime will soon have to answer for its actions.
