Terror Attack in Smara: Polisario and Algerian Regime Condemned in MINURSO Report
On Friday, June 27, the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) conducted an on-site inspection following a grave act of aggression: four projectiles were fired near the Moroccan city of Smara, landing close to civilian zones, with one falling just steps away from MINURSO’s own encampment. This blatant terrorist attack, carried out by the armed militias of the Polisario, was orchestrated from the safe haven provided to them with impunity by the Algerian military regime.

In coordination with the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco, UN observers conducted a technical inspection of the targeted areas. The objective was to determine the nature of the projectiles. The impact points and the proximity to UN installations show a deliberate intent to provoke and escalate tensions.
The Polisario claimed responsibility in a delusional statement, alleging that “enemy military bases” were targeted. In reality, the projectiles landed in empty areas, endangering regional stability with no strategic aim other than to spread chaos.
Algeria’s role: the chief arsonist
No one can still believe in the myth of a “neutral” or “observing” Algeria. The Algerian regime is the main instigator of this latest escalation. By arming, funding, and shielding the Polisario separatist militias, it becomes directly complicit in terrorist acts that threaten not only Morocco but also the safety of international UN observers on the ground.
This attack is no coincidence. It comes just as the United States Congress is reviewing a bill to designate the Polisario as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. Nor is it accidental that international reports, from the United Nations to the Hudson Institute, are increasingly pointing to the Polisario’s links with Iran, Hezbollah, and other terrorist groups operating in the Sahel. This is a well-oiled network, with the Algerian regime as its sponsor.
The UN alerted, the Security Council urged to respond
The detailed report MINURSO will deliver to UN Secretary-General António Guterres is expected to play a central role in the upcoming Security Council debate scheduled for October. Civilians and UN forces are under threat. And an organization supported by a hostile regime continues its criminal actions with the sole aim of sabotaging peace efforts.
In the face of this new aggression, Morocco is acting with responsibility and composure. Its armed forces are ensuring territorial security, while its diplomacy is working to expose the subversive schemes of its adversaries, backed by hard evidence. The Kingdom will not back down. It will stay the course toward peace, development, and stability, remaining resolute on the integrity of its territory.
The time for illusions is over. The international community can no longer tolerate armed terrorist militias, backed by a retrograde military dictatorship, threatening peace in North Africa. The Polisario is not a political movement. It is a terrorist militia. And Algeria is not a neutral country. It is a toxic actor of regional destabilization.
