Casablanca Unveils the New Women’s AFCON Trophy

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) officially unveiled the brand-new trophy for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Wednesday in Casablanca. The redesigned prize, revealed ahead of the tournament set to take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26, is being hailed as a strong symbol of the rapid rise and recognition of women’s football across the continent.

The unveiling ceremony, held in partnership with sponsor TotalEnergies, brought together leading figures in African women’s football, including players and coaches. The new trophy draws direct inspiration from its male counterpart, but its message goes beyond sport. According to CAF, it celebrates equality, unity and excellence.

Visually, the trophy features petal-like shapes rising in a spiral, each petal representing one of the participating nations. Together, they form the silhouette of a blossoming flower. At the center of this floral design is a golden sphere, subtly textured to resemble a football. Embellished with a shiny gold map of Africa, the sphere symbolizes ambition, pride and the global impact of the continent in women’s football.

Crafted from bright silver and matte gold, the trophy’s body is encircled by a golden ring engraved with CAF’s logo. Its white marble base, decorated with golden lines, displays the competition’s name in matte gold lettering—an artistic statement of CAF’s commitment to empowering women’s football across its 54 member associations.

Among the guests at the unveiling was Lamia Boumehdi, the Moroccan head coach of TP Mazembe’s women’s team. Speaking at the event, she expressed her pride in being part of what she described as a “revolution” in African women’s football. Boumehdi, who recently led the Congolese club to the title at the CAF Women’s Champions League held in Morocco, praised the increasing attention being given to the women’s game across the continent and highlighted its rapid technical, tactical and physical development.

Looking ahead to the 2024 Women’s AFCON, she voiced high expectations, confident that the tournament will be a success on every level. “Morocco has everything it takes to host major sporting events,” she said, pointing to the country’s world-class infrastructure as a key asset.

This year’s tournament will feature 12 teams split into three groups. Hosts Morocco are in Group A alongside Zambia, Senegal and DR Congo. Group B includes Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria and Botswana, while Group C features South Africa, Ghana, Mali and Tanzania.
