Ecuador, Morocco Committed to Strengthening Economic Ties – Ecuadorian FM

Rabat - Ecuador and Morocco are committed to revitalizing their economic cooperation and increasing investment flows to build on opportunities available in both markets, Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabriela Sommerfeld said Friday in Rabat.

“Our two countries share a common ambition to boost trade and investment, with the objective of signing a trade agreement that would unlock the full potential of both economies,” Sommerfeld said during a joint press briefing with Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

She underlined the importance of diversifying exports between the two countries and called for greater engagement from the private sector, noting the untapped potential in both the Moroccan and Ecuadorian economies.

In this context, the Ecuadorian top diplomat said both sides are considering the establishment of a commission to implement this shared ambition and further strengthen bilateral economic cooperation. She also welcomed the strength of the dialogue between Rabat and Quito, which has led to the creation of a strategic partnership roadmap.

Sommerfeld noted that Ecuador and Morocco, which share common values, have agreed to advance joint initiatives and projects in areas such as security, intelligence, counterterrorism, drug trafficking, and the use of advanced technologies.

On the multilateral front, she said both nations reaffirmed their commitment to working together in promoting global peace, security, and development.

Regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, Sommerfeld reiterated that Ecuador views the Autonomy Initiative as “the basis” to resolve this regional dispute and supports Morocco’s efforts to reach a realistic, pragmatic, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution under the auspices of the United Nations.
