Global Consensus Rallies Behind Moroccan Sahara, Firmly Supports Autonomy Initiative as Sole Political Solution to Regional Dispute
Rabat - The international momentum driven over the years by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in favor of the Moroccan Sahara and in support of the autonomy Initiative continues to grow, reflecting the international community's consensus on the need to put an end to this regional dispute, within the framework of the Kingdom's national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Since April 2025, this international dynamic has undergone significant new developments, marked by a widened support for the Moroccan Sahara and the Moroccan autonomy Initiative, as well as by ongoing momentum on the ground.
Thus, more than 40 countries reconfirmed their full backing of the Moroccan Sahara and the Moroccan autonomy Initiative as the one and only political solution to this regional dispute, increasing the circle of support to 123 countries worldwide, representing more than 60% of UN member states.
These countries include the United States, which reiterated its acknowledgment of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, while supporting the serious, credible and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute.
The United Kingdom also expressed its support for the Moroccan autonomy proposal, which it considers “the most credible, viable and pragmatic basis for a lasting resolution” of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
This position is an important development, given that the UK is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a member of the Group of Friends of the UN Secretary-General on the Sahara.
France, for its part, has reaffirmed its constant position since the French President’s speech to the Moroccan Parliament in October 2024, as have the 6 countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, several African countries, including Kenya, which now supports the Moroccan autonomy plan, countries from Latin America and Asia (including the Republic of Korea, which has declared that it takes note of the Moroccan autonomy plan) and 9 European countries, following the April 2025 tour by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates of several European capitals.
Of these nine countries, five have reconfirmed their constant position and four new ones – the UK, Croatia, Moldavia and Slovakia – now consider the Moroccan autonomy Initiative as the most serious basis for resolving this regional dispute.
As for the continued dynamic on the ground, several foreign delegations continue to make regular economic prospecting visits with a view to supporting the development of Morocco’s southern provinces for the benefit of the local population.
From now on, this international momentum represents an unavoidable reality and a clear message both to the UN and to the other parties, who are today called upon more than ever to assume their responsibilities to bring this artificial dispute to a close, and to move away from a sclerotic, outdated stance that is out of step with the developments of the issue, both politically and diplomatically as well as on the ground.
