Dwight Bush: Between Morocco, U.S., Strategic and Forward-Looking Relations
Washington - The strategic relationship between Morocco and the United States is marked by its solidity and is expected to be cemented further in areas of high added value, underlined former U.S. ambassador to Rabat Dwight Bush.

In an interview with MAP-Washington on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the accession of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to the Throne, Mr. Bush noted that these long-standing relations are based on a diverse and mutually beneficial partnership, recalling that these centuries-old ties date back to 1777, the year Morocco was the first country to recognize the independence of the United States.
Beyond the political and trade aspect, the two countries also maintain a close cultural relationship, he indicated, citing the increasingly strengthened cooperation between Rabat and Washington in the field of defense and security as evidenced by the annual holding of the military exercise “The African Lion”, the largest and most important in Africa.
Regarding economic cooperation, the former U.S. ambassador stressed the need to strengthen these relations, especially since the two countries are linked by a free trade agreement.
In this respect, he highlighted Morocco’s commitment, particularly in the field of renewable energy, while commending His Majesty the King’s vision to make Morocco a stable and emerging economy with a low-carbon energy sector.
Referring to the momentum of international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, Dwight Bush noted that this recognition is of paramount importance for the region and the parties concerned, as well as for the United States, Europe, and beyond. He emphasized the need to continue strengthening peace and stability in this part of the world.
The U.S. diplomat further discussed the ongoing development and investment dynamics in the southern provinces, noting that this socioeconomic boom is likely to raise the standard of living of local populations and strengthen growth throughout the region.
He also highlighted Morocco’s efforts to promote the role of civil society and inclusive citizen participation in various facets of life throughout the country.
The former U.S. ambassador to Rabat commended the role Morocco is playing, under the leadership of His Majesty the King, in strengthening relations between Africa, Europe, and beyond, in an international context increasingly marked by uncertainty and division.
In this regard, he noted that His Majesty the King’s insightful Vision for stability, prosperity, democracy and South-South cooperation is a model to follow and a source of inspiration in the region.
