Nasser Bourita Visits North Macedonia as Support for Morocco’s Sahara Initiative Expands to the Western Balkans
As part of an official visit to Skopje on Monday, July 21, Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, was received by Timco Mucunski, North Macedonia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.

This meeting forms part of a growing diplomatic momentum, guided by the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, and aimed at strengthening Morocco’s bilateral relations with Balkan nations amid a rising wave of international recognition of the Kingdom’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
At the heart of the visit were high-level political talks, discussions on economic, cultural, and commercial cooperation, and an expansion of global support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative, widely viewed as the only serious, credible, and realistic solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Bourita’s visit to Skopje follows a clear and accelerating international trend that has gained ground since early 2025. Numerous countries in Africa, Latin America, Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and now the Western Balkans have aligned themselves with Morocco’s position. Today, more than 116 nations support the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, while recognition of the so-called “SADR” continues to erode.
Like Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, and Moldova, North Macedonia is part of a shifting geopolitical landscape in the Balkans, where Morocco is increasingly seen as a stable, forward-looking partner. This shared outlook is paired with growing interest in the cooperation opportunities offered by the Kingdom, including in its rapidly developing southern provinces.
Talks in Skopje also highlighted Morocco’s efforts within the UN-led process, under the exclusive auspices of the Secretary-General, and emphasized the need to bring an end to this artificial dispute while respecting Morocco’s national sovereignty.
Morocco’s diplomacy continues its upward trajectory, positioning the Kingdom as a key international player and a model of stability and partnership. Bourita’s visit to Skopje marks another step in building a growing international consensus around the Moroccan identity of the Sahara.
