Nasser Bourita Received by the President of the Portuguese Parliament, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco

As part of his working visit to Lisbon, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, met with José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, President of the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic. The meeting took place in the context of the excellent bilateral relations between Morocco and Portugal—two strategic partners united by a shared vision for the future of the Mediterranean and Atlantic regions.

On this occasion, Portugal reaffirmed its position in a Joint Declaration issued Tuesday, expressing its “full support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative as the most serious, credible, and realistic basis for resolving the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.” This clear and unambiguous stance reflects the strength of political ties between Rabat and Lisbon, as well as their alignment on key regional and international issues.

Portugal also welcomed the Atlantic Initiatives launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to promote Africa’s development and enhance the strategic value of the Atlantic space as a driver of South-South cooperation. As an Atlantic nation itself, Portugal views these royal initiatives as a bold and forward-thinking vision for the continent’s shared future.

The visit further reaffirmed both countries’ determination to strengthen their strategic partnership—considered a model of exemplary cooperation in the Western Mediterranean—built on mutual respect, political trust, and shared economic interests.

This high-level meeting once again confirms Morocco and Portugal’s joint commitment to shaping a future based on stability, shared prosperity, and deeper regional cooperation.
