Italian Economist Sees Morocco Among Africa’s Most Advanced Countries in Development, Infrastructure

Rome - Italian economist and geopolitical analyst Domenico Letizia views Morocco as one of the most advanced countries in Africa in terms of development and infrastructure. According to him, it has established itself as a key player on the regional, continental, and international stages.

In an interview with MAP-Rome on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of HM King Mohammed VI’s enthronement, Letizia described Morocco as “an African model of multidimensional development” driven by strategic reforms initiated under HM the King’s leadership.

He noted that Morocco’s economic upswing trend, guided by the Royal Vision, is rooted in the deep modernization of its economy and infrastructure.

Over the past two decades, Morocco has built world-class infrastructure, including the largest Port in Africa Tanger Med Port Complex, the high-speed rail line connecting Tangier to Casablanca, and an extensive highway network that links all major regions, the economist recalled.

Letizia also emphasized that Morocco’s assertive economic policy promotes industrialization and attracts foreign investment, highlighting that key sectors such as automotive, aerospace, and renewable energy are rapidly expanding, positioning the country as a leading industrial hub in Africa.

Regarding energy transition, Letizia highlighted that the Kingdom had anticipated environmental stakes by massively investing in renewables. The Noor solar complex in Ouarzazate forms part of Morocco’s ambition to emerge as a leader in energy transition, he said.

On the social front, the economist underscored the Family Code reform as one of the landmark projects which have been a turning point in fostering women’s rights.

He also highlighted the National Human Development Initiative as a cornerstone of Morocco’s social policy which targets poverty and marginalization, and addresses youth economic inclusion and human capital.

The Italian expert praised Morocco’s role in Africa as a key player in regional dynamics. In his view, the country has strengthened its presence in Subsaharan Africa through a proactive economic diplomacy supported by national financial institutions and major companies.

“The development achieved by the Kingdom under HM King Mohammed VI’s reign reflects a strategic vision of modernity, openness, and social justice. Through assertive diplomacy, bold investments, and in-depth social reforms, Morocco has stood as a model of structured sustainable transformation.” he concluded.
