Washington Reaffirms Its Unwavering Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty over the Sahara, to Algeria’s Dismay

In a clear and forceful message that defies the hopes of Algeria’s military regime, the United States has once again reaffirmed its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. It is a diplomatic blow for Algiers, which continues to push destabilizing narratives and misinformation campaigns on the international stage.

On Tuesday, July 29, 2025, during his confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Richard Buchan III, nominated as the next U.S. Ambassador to Morocco, left no room for ambiguity. He declared, “No solution is conceivable outside Moroccan sovereignty,” underscoring Washington’s firm stance in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity.

Buchan went further, reiterating that the 2020 decision by the Trump administration to recognize Moroccan sovereignty remains valid and is part of a long-term U.S. commitment to a credible and realistic resolution: autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, as proposed by the Kingdom within the UN framework. He pledged to work, from the start of his mission, to accelerate progress on this issue in full respect of international law and the shared strategic interests of Rabat and Washington.

He also emphasized Morocco’s status as a key strategic ally of the United States, and expressed his commitment to strengthening bilateral ties across security, defense, economic, and technological sectors—an illustration of the deep and stable relationship between the two nations.

Meanwhile, Algeria’s regime, increasingly isolated on the diplomatic front and facing rising internal dissent, has suffered another painful setback. By betting on a possible reversal of U.S. policy, Algerian leaders have once again been met with disappointment and a stark reminder that the international community—especially global powers—is steadily aligning with Morocco’s position.

This latest confirmation from Washington marks another clear victory for Moroccan diplomacy under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. It is further proof that any lasting solution to the Sahara issue must start with recognition of the Kingdom’s sovereignty. The course of history continues to favor Morocco.
