Morocco, a Strategic Partner for India’s Food Security and a Leading Fertilizer Supplier
Morocco continues to cement its position as a key player in the global fertilizer market. According to an official statement by Indian Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel, delivered in Parliament, the Kingdom is among India’s top suppliers of water-soluble fertilizers, alongside China, Belgium, Egypt, Germany, and the United States.

These water-soluble fertilizers, primarily used in horticultural crop fertilization, saw consumption of around 335,000 tonnes during the 2023–2024 fiscal year, according to figures from the Indian government. The minister clarified that Indian companies are free to import phosphate- or potash-based fertilizers from international suppliers of their choice.
India is currently facing a supply decline from China, which has suspended the export of certain fertilizer types, raising concerns in the agricultural sector. In this context, Morocco is emerging as a reliable supplier capable of meeting India’s growing market demand.
The Indian minister also noted that these fertilizers are not included in the national subsidy program known as “NBS,” meaning that farmers do not receive government financial support for their purchase. Despite their high cost, these fertilizers are particularly suited for modern irrigation systems such as drip irrigation and sprayers, and can significantly boost agricultural productivity.
Specialized media sources have also reported that several Indian importers recently signed major contracts with Morocco and Saudi Arabia for the purchase of phosphate-based fertilizers such as DAP (diammonium phosphate), NPS, and TSP.
In this framework, six Indian importers have reached a strategic agreement with the OCP Group (Office Chérifien des Phosphates) for the import of 1.5 million tonnes of DAP and 1 million tonnes of TSP. Notably, since the start of India’s TSP imports in June 2024, the country has not sourced this product from any nation other than Morocco.
This momentum underscores Morocco’s central role in global food security and highlights the OCP’s structural influence in international agricultural supply chains, particularly in high-demand countries like India.
