National Day of Moroccans Living Abroad: Morocco Banks on Digitalization to Bring Its Citizens Around the World Closer

This Sunday, August 10, 2025, Morocco proudly and gratefully celebrates the National Day of Moroccans Living Abroad (MRE), established in 2003 by His Majesty King Mohammed VI. True to its ambition to keep pace with the developments of the times, the Kingdom has chosen this year a highly strategic theme: “The Digitalization Drive: A Lever to Strengthen Local Services for Moroccans Around the World.”
For more than two decades, this day has been a special occasion to reaffirm the central role played by the Moroccan community abroad in the country’s scientific, economic, cultural, and social development. It is also a solemn moment to salute their leading role in promoting Morocco’s image and values on the international stage.
The 2011 Constitution cemented this unbreakable bond by granting, through its Articles 16, 17, 18, and 163, major rights and achievements to Moroccans Living Abroad, responding to their aspirations and ensuring their active involvement in national life.
To support this dynamic, the Kingdom has established a set of dedicated institutions, including the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad and the Hassan II Foundation for Moroccans Living Abroad, as well as a ministerial commission tasked with coordinating actions in favor of this community. This framework ensures full coherence in public policies, taking into account the realities of integration in host countries and the challenges related to passing on Moroccan values to new generations.
The 2025 edition highlights a priority that has now become a national imperative: digital transformation. By modernizing and simplifying access to administrative and institutional services, digitalization becomes a powerful tool to bring Morocco closer to its citizens settled across the globe. This strategic direction aims to offer faster, more transparent, and more tailored solutions to the needs of MREs, while fostering innovation and the sharing of best practices between public and private stakeholders.
As every year, ceremonies and meetings have been organized across the Kingdom’s prefectures and provinces, allowing MREs visiting during the summer period to actively take part in this national tribute. These events provide valuable opportunities for listening, dialogue, and reflection on the expectations of the diaspora, in order to address them more effectively through inclusive and efficient public policies.
Faithful to their attachment to Morocco, Moroccans Around the World continue to make an invaluable contribution to the country’s prosperity—through their financial transfers, investments, and commitment to structuring projects. More than ever, they remain ambassadors at heart, carrying the values and ambitions of a Kingdom resolutely looking toward the future.
