Montpellier Mayor Michaël Delafosse hails Morocco’s “exemplary” level of development
The Mayor of Montpellier, Michaël Delafosse, has praised the “exemplary” level of development achieved by the Kingdom of Morocco in various fields.

“I had the chance last April to visit Morocco, specifically Fez, Rabat, Tangier, Casablanca and Dakhla. I received an unforgettable welcome and was able to witness all the excellence and innovation of a country that stands out as exemplary in terms of development in many areas: urban planning, water management, port infrastructure, renewable energies, sports, culture…,” said Mr. Delafosse in an interview with MAP.
The President of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole also expressed satisfaction with the excellence of decentralized cooperation with several Moroccan cities.
“Local authorities are an essential link in the diplomacy and the strong relationship that today binds France and Morocco. It is an unbreakable bond that unites us and our peoples,” affirmed Mr. Delafosse. He noted that Montpellier has always maintained “very strong ties” with the Kingdom.
“Many of my fellow citizens are of Moroccan origin or nationality. Their contributions to life in the city are numerous and valuable, and the partnerships and cooperation between our territory and those of Morocco are both long-standing and vibrant,” he said, recalling the twinning of Montpellier with the city of Fez, established in 2003 and renewed during his last visit to include new areas such as urban planning, transport and sports, on the eve of the 2025 AFCON and the 2030 World Cup to be hosted in Morocco.
Speaking about decentralized cooperation with the city of Dakhla, Mr. Delafosse recalled that during his visit he had the opportunity to meet with local authorities and express his support for economic development projects led by Montpellier-based actors, such as MGH Energy’s initiative for the production of decarbonized energy, particularly for air transport.
He also noted that cooperation with the city of Dakhla will be strengthened in sports, culture and tourism, announcing that next autumn a delegation from the Montpellier Chamber of Commerce and Industry will visit the city in the southern provinces to bring these projects to fruition.
He concluded: “More than ever, it is an equal-to-equal relationship that we are building in the cooperation between our two countries. Cities and territories have a crucial role to play in this regard.”
