US Embassy Delegation Visits Laâyoune Ahead of UN Preparations
A delegation of diplomats and military officials from the United States Embassy in Rabat is scheduled to make an official visit to Laâyoune on Monday, August 18. The mission includes meetings with senior officials of MINURSO, in particular with its head, Alexander Ivanko, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General.

The visit comes at a crucial moment, as the UN Security Council prepares at the end of October to examine and adopt a new resolution extending MINURSO’s mandate for another year. The draft resolution will be submitted following a closed-door presentation of Alexander Ivanko’s report, which will provide an assessment of the situation on the ground.
It should be recalled that US President Donald Trump, on August 2, reaffirmed his strong support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and for the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom in 2007. In a letter addressed to His Majesty King Mohammed VI on the occasion of Throne Day, the US President emphasized Morocco’s sovereignty and the relevance of its proposal as a realistic and lasting solution.
Washington remains a key player in this dossier, as it is responsible for drafting all Security Council resolutions concerning the question of the Moroccan Sahara.
