Dakhla: Opening of the Forum on Sustainable Economic Development

The Forum on Sustainable Economic Development opened on Tuesday in Dakhla, at the initiative of the United States’ International Republican Institute (IRI), in partnership with the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab Regional Council.

This two-day gathering is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen dialogue and develop strategic coordination mechanisms in support of innovation and more effective development initiatives.

The forum also provides a platform to explore ways of aligning education and training with labor market needs, thereby opening new opportunities for young people and local businesses. Participants highlighted the region’s progress in fostering economic innovation, while discussions focused on skills development and governance tools such as institutional coordination, public-private partnerships, and policy innovation.

Randy Schuenemann, Vice-Chairman of the IRI Board, stressed that the forum places sustainable economic development at the center of its priorities, with the goal of driving growth and prosperity across the region. In a statement to MAP, he praised the development vision of Dakhla-Oued Eddahab, which spans several strategic sectors and creates lasting opportunities for local communities.

For his part, Moulay Boutal Lembarki, Vice-President of the Regional Council, noted that the event provides a valuable platform for exchanging experiences and perspectives on territorial management strategies.

Bringing together researchers, experts, business leaders, and regional officials from a wide range of sectors, the forum aims to highlight strategies to encourage investment and promote promising economic initiatives, paving the way for integrated and sustainable development.

The event also offers the visiting American delegation a chance to discover Dakhla’s economic and development potential firsthand, identify investment opportunities, and engage in constructive dialogue with local partners.
