US Congress Members Reaffirm American Recognition of Morocco’s Sovereignty Over the Sahara and Call for More Investments in the Region

Rabat – Members of the United States Congress reaffirmed on Friday in Rabat Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

Following talks with Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, they also highlighted the promising prospects of cooperation between Morocco and the United States.

“We welcome the prospects of cooperation between Morocco and the United States, particularly in the Sahara,” stressed Congressman Mike Lawler, underscoring Washington’s recognition of the Kingdom’s sovereignty over the region.

Lawler also reiterated American support for the Autonomy Plan presented by Morocco in 2007, expressing his hope that this recognition will encourage greater American investment in the southern provinces, thereby strengthening the longstanding ties between the two countries. He recalled that Morocco was the first nation to recognize the independence of the United States of America in 1777.

He also expressed his gratitude for the efforts made by the Kingdom, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to promote stability and peace at both the regional and continental levels, while praising the historic partnership between the United States and Morocco, particularly in the areas of security and economic development.

For his part, Congressman Ritchie Torres welcomed the friendship and strategic partnership between the two countries, noting with satisfaction the American recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, a position recently reaffirmed by President Donald Trump.

“Morocco, located at a strategic crossroads between Europe, the Middle East and Africa, is the United States’ closest friend in North Africa,” Torres stated.
