Morocco–India: A New Industrial and Military Era Opens with the Inauguration of Tata’s Factory in Berrechid by the Indian Defense Minister
September 22 and 23, 2025 will remain a landmark in Moroccan-Indian relations. On the occasion of his official visit to the Kingdom, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, expected in Rabat at the invitation of his Moroccan counterpart Abdellatif Loudyi, Minister Delegate in charge of the Administration of National Defense, will inaugurate the first Tata Group factory dedicated to the production of military armored vehicles in Berrechid.

This industrial venture, the result of a strategic partnership, reflects the shared determination of Rabat and New Delhi to strengthen their cooperation in high value-added sectors. According to the Embassy of India in Rabat, it symbolizes “a decisive step in co-development and co-production” and is expected to generate more than one hundred direct jobs, largely entrusted to Moroccan professionals trained in India.
During his stay, Rajnath Singh will hold talks with several Moroccan officials. Discussions will focus on expanding defense industrial partnerships, technology transfer, specialized training, and the implementation of joint projects. The Indian minister will also meet with Ryad Mezzour, Minister of Industry and Trade, to explore new avenues for economic and commercial cooperation, including the creation of joint ventures and the expansion of export opportunities.
The visit is expected to result in the signing of major agreements on military cooperation, covering training, joint exercises, the exchange of expertise, as well as key areas such as maritime security and the fight against piracy.
The Berrechid project stems from the agreement signed in September 2024 between the Moroccan Administration of National Defense, the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development (AMDIE), and the Tata Group. The factory, whose construction will span 36 months, will produce 100 WhAP 8×8 armored vehicles per year, with an initial local integration rate of 35%, expected to reach 50%. This project will generate nearly 90 direct jobs and more than 250 indirect jobs, while stimulating the regional industrial fabric.
The WhAP 8×8 (Wheeled Armoured Platform) is the first amphibious armored vehicle designed in India. Developed by Tata in partnership with the Indian military research agency DRDO, this modular and versatile vehicle combines rapid deployment, advanced protection, and adaptability to various tactical scenarios, including troop transport, reconnaissance, and logistical operations.
For analysts, this inauguration goes beyond the industrial dimension: it illustrates the strength and depth of the strategic partnership between Rabat and New Delhi. It follows the momentum initiated since the visit of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to India in 2015 and his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Finally, it marks a decisive step in the determination of both nations to build sustainable cooperation, combining defense, industry, and global security.
