China: Morocco’s Energy Minister Highlights Royal Long-Term Vision for Renewable Energy
Chengdu (China) - Morocco's Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, highlighted on Tuesday in Chengdu (China) the long-term vision of HM King Mohammed VI, which has enabled Morocco to become a regional pioneer in renewable energy since the launch of the national energy strategy in 2009.

In a statement to MAP on the sidelines of the second ministerial meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group (WFEG) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Benali noted that the high-level meeting “provided an excellent platform to present HM King Mohammed VI’s long-term vision, may God assist Him.”
The Sovereign’s enlightened vision allowed, since the adoption of Morocco’s energy strategy in 2009, a key place for clean energies contributing to global prosperity, particularly renewable energies and civil nuclear power, she stated.
Reiterating Morocco’s commitment as “a very active member of the IAEA and a defender of multilateralism,” Benali emphasized the importance of cooperative approaches in advancing fusion technology, highlighting the major technological and financial challenges posed by this energy source of the future.
“Fusion requires mastery of extreme temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees Celsius, and the necessary funding runs into billions of dollars,” she underlined, adding that “by 2050, fusion could become a technology capable of meeting global needs, if it can compete with renewable energies.”
In this regard, the minister called for leveraging research and development in fusion to promote collaborative models and multilateral partnerships, providing nations in the Global South with access to development.
The second ministerial meeting of the WFEG of the IAEA represents an opportunity to reaffirm the essential role of science and technology in promoting peace and prosperity worldwide, she added.
Held over three days at the Tianfu International Conference Center in Chengdu, the second WFEG ministerial meeting follows the inaugural meeting organized in Rome in 2024. This international gathering brings together ministers, scientists, researchers, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and energy sector investors to exchange on strategies for the development and experimentation of fusion energy.
