The Algerian delegation, true to its logic of hostility towards Morocco, sparks a scandal upon arrival at the hotel
Hardly had it arrived in Rabat than the Algerian football delegation revealed its true face: that of systematic provocation and open contempt. By attempting to conceal the portrait of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in a meeting room at the Marriott hotel, the message was clear: to manufacture an artificial incident where Morocco was offering hospitality, respect and professionalism.
This unseemly gesture, which was quickly rectified by the hotel’s management, is far from trivial. It forms part of a well-known strategy of the Algerian regime, which exports its political frustrations into sporting events, in blatant disregard for the most basic rules of diplomatic decorum and respect for the host country.
The presence, within this delegation, of elements clearly linked to security circles once again illustrates the instrumentalisation of sport by a military regime in constant search of tension and confrontation. Unable to tolerate Morocco’s success, its continental influence and the exemplary organisation of AFCON 2025, Algiers appears to have chosen the path of symbolic sabotage.
Yet these clumsy attempts collide with an undeniable reality: Morocco is ready, vigilant and composed. The Moroccan authorities, drawing on their experience and their strong sense of state responsibility, will not be distracted or provoked by manoeuvres as childish as they are ineffective.
Faced with a regime trapped in rigidity and resentment, the Kingdom of Morocco continues to move forward with dignity, composure and confidence. AFCON 2025 will remain a showcase of Moroccan success, regardless of the opinions of those who seem unable to exist except through scandal.
