In a statement issued on Tuesday, February 4, the National Salvation Front in Syria (NSF) urged the Syrian authorities to reintegrate into their “natural Arab and Islamic environment” and called for the official recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, along with the establishment of a consulate in Laâyoune.
The Syrian opposition organization emphasized the importance of Damascus reconnecting with its “historical and civilizational constants” by strengthening ties with nations advocating “Arab aspirations for unity and stability.” In this context, it praised Morocco, Egypt, and Jordan for their stabilization efforts in the region.
The NSF highlighted the recent visit to Rabat by an envoy of the Syrian president, describing it as a “historic breakthrough” aimed at reaffirming Morocco’s commitment to a comprehensive political solution to the Syrian crisis. This initiative was seen as a significant step toward Syria’s reintegration into the Arab fold.
The statement underscored the need for Syria to adopt a clear position on the Sahara issue. “We call for the official recognition of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its Sahara and the opening of a Syrian consulate in Laâyoune,” the NSF declared. According to the organization, such a move would represent “a powerful signal” of Syria’s return to the Arab world and its alignment with major regional capitals.
Finally, the NSF called for enhanced cooperation between Syria and countries advocating for “modernization and openness in the Arab world.” It emphasized the crucial role of involving the private sector and the Syrian diaspora in the country’s reconstruction efforts.
