President Trump’s Special Adviser for Africa, Massad Boulos, Reaffirms U.S. Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty over its Sahara

The Special Adviser for Africa to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, Mr. Massad Boulos, described the reaffirmation of the U.S. recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara as “strong” and “unequivocal.”

During the telephone conversation between His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the President of the United States, in December 2020, President Donald Trump informed the Sovereign of the issuance of a presidential proclamation — an act carrying undeniable legal and political weight and with immediate effect — regarding the decision of the United States of America to recognize the full sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over the entire region of the Moroccan Sahara.

“A strong statement from Secretary Rubio unequivocally reaffirming America’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara,” wrote the close adviser to the U.S. President in a social media post published on Friday.

Mr. Boulos accompanied his message with a repost of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s social media post, in which he reiterated the official statement released by the U.S. State Department following his talks on April 8 in Washington with the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita.

Secretary Rubio reiterated that the United States recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and supports the autonomy proposal presented by the Kingdom as “the only basis for a just and lasting solution” to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

“I met with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita to reaffirm the strong partnership between the United States and Morocco. I reiterated that the United States recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara,” and “supports the Moroccan autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to this dispute,” Mr. Rubio reaffirmed on his X account.
