Chakib Alj: Today’s Economic Challenges Demand Stronger Cooperation Between Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Region Businesses

Speaking at the opening of the 3rd Marrakech Economic Parliamentary Forum for Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions, Mr. Alj emphasized that current realities also call for the construction of new partnerships capable of turning challenges into concrete opportunities.

He advocated for closer coordination between countries of the two regions to collectively overcome issues such as food security, water scarcity, climate change, and technological transition.

In a spirit of complementarity, Mr. Alj stated that sustainable and inclusive development must necessarily involve the promotion of productive investment, implementation of innovative public-private partnerships, talent development, and the creation of synergies between national and regional businesses—especially in the face of increasingly severe impacts from climate change.

In this regard, he recalled that Morocco has adopted a strategic plan in the field of renewable energies, aiming to achieve a 52% share of clean energy in the national energy mix by 2030. He noted that this target will be reached as early as 2027, thanks to the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

Furthermore, Mr. Alj noted that in the area of digital transformation, artificial intelligence represents a major growth driver. This requires fair technological governance that allows all players—especially micro, small, and medium enterprises, which make up more than 90% of Morocco’s economic fabric—to access innovation and technology, enhance their competitiveness, and develop their human capital.

To support these accelerated transformations, the role of parliaments is more crucial than ever, he stressed, noting that they are called upon—as key institutions—to drive reforms, improve the business climate, and adopt coherent and appropriate legislative frameworks.

In this context, CGEM plays an important role through its parliamentary group in the House of Councillors, a key player in the legislative body. This group represents the voice of national businesses in Parliament, relaying the concerns of economic stakeholders, addressing the real challenges they face, and proposing constructive solutions to improve the business environment and strengthen economic development.

Held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Forum—organized under the theme “Unprecedented Economic, Trade, and Energy Challenges – Response from Regional Parliaments and the Private Sector”—provides an advanced institutional framework for dialogue and cooperation between parliamentarians and institutional partners of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.
