Sir Liam Fox: Thanks to Dynamic Royal Diplomacy, Morocco Continues to Consolidate Its Sovereignty Over the Sahara

Speaking to the Moroccan Press Agency (MAP), Sir Fox said the UK government’s support, announced Sunday, for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as a solution to the Sahara issue, reflects the “foresight and relevance of the diplomacy led by His Majesty the King.” The Abraham Accords Group was established in the British Parliament in 2021.

The United Kingdom officially endorsed Morocco’s Autonomy Plan on Sunday, describing it as “the most credible, viable, and pragmatic basis” for resolving the regional dispute.

This position was formalized in a joint communiqué signed in Rabat by UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.

The UK also affirmed its intention to act in line with this position at bilateral, regional, and international levels.

Sir Liam Fox, a former minister who has held several key government positions, emphasized that Royal leadership “is a model that shows the path forward, even in the most challenging political environments.”

The British politician further stated that the UK’s support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative “is the clearest expression yet of Morocco’s importance as a strategic partner of the United Kingdom.”

He noted that this decision will undoubtedly revitalize cooperation with Morocco, “one of the UK’s oldest allies.”

According to Sir Fox, the UK and Morocco have now reached a new milestone in their bilateral relations. The UK’s decision will pave the way for a deeper partnership between the two Kingdoms, including joint projects and investments in Morocco’s southern provinces.

Backing the Autonomy Plan, he added, also recognizes the crucial role Morocco’s southern provinces are set to play—not only in areas such as renewable energy, but also as a gateway to other regions in Africa, offering significant opportunities for prosperity, stability, and security.
