A Rapid Rise Fueled by Innovation
By climbing two spots to secure 3rd place in the prestigious Container Port Performance Index (CPPI)—published by the World Bank and UNCTAD—Tanger Med has outperformed major ports like Algeciras (12th) and Port Said (16th), earning an impressive score of 159.6 points. This achievement is no coincidence. It is the result of Morocco’s proactive strategy built on technological modernization, logistical transparency, and operational reliability.
Among recent innovations is the deployment of a digital electronic seal platform, which allows for real-time cargo tracking and strengthens security against fraud. This is complemented by the opening of a tactical logistics supervision center—a state-of-the-art control tower equipped with the latest technology for ultra-responsive goods flow management.
A Record-Breaking Year with Impressive Figures
The year 2024 marked a turning point for Tanger Med. For the first time, the port handled over 10 million TEUs, reaching exactly 10.24 million containers. This extraordinary volume places it at 17th worldwide, according to Alphaliner, while firmly establishing its position as the undisputed leader in the Mediterranean and across Africa.
At the same time, the Tanger Med Group reported consolidated revenues of 11.23 billion dirhams, an increase of 12.3% compared to 2023. These figures reflect the steady rise of a global logistics hub that continues to expand its international reach.
An Integrated Industrial Ecosystem Driving Economic Sovereignty
Tanger Med’s strength also lies in its hybrid model, which combines world-class port infrastructure with a fully integrated industrial platform. Spread across more than 3,000 hectares, around 1,400 companies operate in key sectors such as automotive, aerospace, textiles, agribusiness, and logistics. In 2024 alone, these industrial units generated 174 billion dirhams in revenue and supported the creation of over 130,000 jobs.
This unique positioning makes Tanger Med far more than just a port—it is a backbone of the Moroccan economy, a national competitiveness driver, and an intercontinental logistics hub connected to major African, European, Asian, and American markets.
Tanger Med at the Heart of a New Global Trade Geography
As global supply chains are restructured and logistical sovereignty becomes a major geopolitical issue, Morocco, through Tanger Med, is asserting its central role in international trade. The rise of this port embodies the bold choice made by the Kingdom in the early 2000s to turn its northern region into a global trade gateway.
The goal is now clear: at its current pace of growth, driven by targeted investments and a clear strategic vision, Tanger Med could surpass its Asian and European competitors to become the world’s second-largest container port by the end of 2025.
