A Clear Message from London and Paris to Iran
With Iranian missiles and drones regularly targeting Israel in recent days, Iran has issued explicit warnings to Western powers: any assistance to the Jewish state will be treated as an act of war, and their military bases or naval assets in the region would become legitimate targets. However, neither the UK nor France appears willing to yield to intimidation.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the redeployment of military assets in the region and affirmed that the UK is ready to “take all necessary measures” to defend British interests and support its historic allies. British Finance Minister Rachel Reeves stated on Sky News that UK fighter jets sent to the Middle East could, if needed, intervene to defend Israel, while also ensuring the protection of British forces.
France Aligns with the UK
Emmanuel Macron has also taken a firm stance. “If Israel were to make the request, France would take part in protection and defense operations,” he declared, refusing to remain a bystander as the situation deteriorates. The Élysée has not ruled out active participation in missile interceptions should the threat escalate further.
The United States has already acknowledged its involvement in neutralizing Iranian attacks, but France and the UK—though not officially confirming—have strongly implied that they are prepared to act in the name of regional security, strategic solidarity with Israel, and the prevention of a full-scale conflict at Europe’s doorstep.
Iran’s strategy of using the war in Gaza to justify strikes against Israel now appears to be pushing the conflict toward internationalization—an outcome the Islamic Republic may come to deeply regret. Any attack on a French or British base would likely provoke a massive retaliation, possibly even direct military involvement—something Iran seems eager to avoid at all costs.
