Rabat: Interministerial Commission for the Development of the “Blue Economy” Holds First Meeting

According to a statement from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, this high-level meeting, attended by several members of the government and senior officials from relevant institutions, marked the official launch of the process to draft a national roadmap for the development of the blue economy.

The statement explained that the meeting led to the adoption of the action plan that will guide this strategic initiative aimed at shaping public policies related to marine environments.

The meeting falls within the framework of implementing the High Directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, as outlined in the royal message addressed on June 9, 2025, to participants at the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice. The message was read by Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa.

In the message, the King emphasized the importance of sustainable and sovereign use of national marine resources in support of economic growth, territorial equity, and economic sovereignty.

The meeting also allowed attending government officials to share their sectoral visions, put forward concrete recommendations for the next phases of the roadmap, and identify key institutional and operational challenges to be addressed in order to ensure a successful transition to a sustainable blue economy.

Discussions highlighted the need for coordinated governance, knowledge-based maritime planning, and an investment framework that encourages innovation and sustainability.

The blue economy program aims to establish an innovative and inclusive development model, harnessing the significant potential of strategic sectors such as maritime fishing, port logistics, renewable marine energy, coastal tourism, and marine ecosystem protection.

The program also aims to create “regional coastal hubs” that will drive territorial competitiveness and job creation.

This initiative is being supported technically and financially by international partners, particularly through the Blue Economy Support Program carried out in partnership with the World Bank.
