Initiated by the Moroccan Embassy in Ethiopia in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, this event highlights the impact of cooperation between Moroccan and Ethiopian cooperatives, with a particular focus on sustainable entrepreneurship led by women.
The week, organized in partnership with the OCP Group, is marked by an exhibition of local products by Moroccan and Ethiopian women’s cooperatives.
It aims to highlight the role of women’s empowerment and women’s cooperatives in promoting the agricultural sector in both countries.
Speaking at the week’s launch ceremony, Ethiopian Minister of Women and Social Affairs Ergoge Tesfaye, affirmed that the organization of this Social and Solidarity Economy Week reflects the depth and strength of relations between Morocco and Ethiopia, stressing that the two countries are historically pillars of African solidarity and mutual understanding.
She also spoke of the two countries’ commitment to strengthening South-South cooperation through sharing best practices in the face of development challenges, believing that solidarity and the social economy are effective tools for tackling structural disparities, particularly those linked to gender, creating decent jobs and empowering communities, especially women and young people.
For her part, Morocco’s ambassador to Ethiopia and Djibouti Nezha Alaoui M’Hammdi highlighted that the event aims to celebrate the strength, determination and empowerment of Moroccan and Ethiopian women, believing that the two countries share the same vision of African development and South-South cooperation.
Morocco’s policy on women’s empowerment is part of a global approach aimed at promoting gender equality and strengthening the role of women in all areas of socio-economic and political life, she added.
The main pillars of this policy are the legislative and institutional framework, awareness-raising and education programs, as well as vocational training programs, thanks to which initiatives have been put in place to offer women vocational training and employment opportunities, particularly in the crafts, agriculture and new technologies sectors, the diplomat noted.
The kick-off of the Morocco-Ethiopia Social and Solidarity Economy Week was attended by several Ethiopian officials and diplomats accredited in Addis Ababa.
