Moroccan Sahara : Portugal’s Support Marks ‘New Diplomatic Victory’ for Rabat – French Weekly

“Portugal has taken the leap,” the publication wrote, following remarks by Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel, who on Tuesday in Lisbon voiced his country’s support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, described as “the most serious, credible and constructive” basis for resolving the dispute.

“After the United Kingdom, which in June described the plan as the most credible, viable and pragmatic foundation for a lasting resolution, and France, which reaffirmed its backing in April, Portugal now becomes the latest European country to align with the pro-Moroccan front on this issue,” the article added.

The weekly noted that the number of countries supporting Morocco’s sovereignty claims over the territory has grown in recent months, citing backing from the US, Spain, and Germany, in addition to the UK and France.

Portugal’s position expressing “its full support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the most serious, credible and constructive basis to settle this dispute” was expressed in the Joint Statement signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita and the Portuguese Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, following their meeting on Tuesday in Lisbon.
