Speaking during the confirmation hearing of the U.S. Ambassador-designate to Morocco, Duke Buchan III, before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the senators emphasized the importance of fostering relations with the North African country given its strategic importance, particularly in terms of regional security.
“Morocco is one of America’s oldest allies and a vital partner at the crossroads of Africa, Europe and the Middle East”, underlined Republican Senator Bill Hagerty, senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
He also highlighted Morocco’s role in regional security, counter terrorism, economic development, as well as in promoting coexistence.
The senator pointed out that Morocco and the United States are “historical” partners driven by the desire to further strengthen their cooperation in areas of common interest.
For his part, the Democratic Senator Chris Murphy emphasized the “important” nature of relations between Rabat and Washington, which are also distinguished by their strength and resilience.
For the United States, Morocco is a “leading country” in the region and far beyond, he told the committee members.
In the same vein, Senator Jacky Rosen highlighted the importance of multidimensional cooperation between Morocco and the United States. The Democratic senator advocated for strengthening these ties, particularly in cybersecurity and the energy sector.
Speaking to the Senate Committee, the new U.S. Ambassador-designate to Rabat emphasized that Morocco constitutes a “pillar of stability” in the region, thanks to its strategic location, which makes it “essential to U.S. national security.”
