The Hassan II Foundation for Moroccans Living Abroad, whose mission is to protect and defend the rights and interests of Moroccans residing abroad, is following these alarming developments with the greatest concern, as they have no place in a democratic society.
In 2010, during an academic meeting in Seville, the Foundation had already warned of the rise of xenophobic and Islamophobic discourse on social media. At the time, such rhetoric was seen as being imported from abroad. Sadly, it is now homegrown, reflecting a growing hostility towards Moroccans and foreigners.
The Hassan II Foundation for Moroccans Living Abroad, which fully recognizes the attachment of Spaniards to the values of freedom, equality, dignity, respect for others and coexistence, and which is aware of the warm welcome that Spain offers to foreigners, pays tribute to the public and moral authorities, political parties, various components of civil society, and the press who have reacted firmly and with dignity to these unfortunate events. The Foundation denounces and condemns these deviations, which are unworthy of Spain.
The Foundation also commends the courage, maturity and civic spirit of Moroccan compatriots who have been victims of these incidents, and assures them of its full solidarity, support and commitment to defending their rights and interests.
