Creation of the Ecuador-Morocco Friendship Group in the Ecuadorian National Assembly

Chaired by Paola Michel Jaramillo Zurita, a member of the center-right National Democratic Action party (ADN) led by President Daniel Noboa, the Ecuador-Morocco Friendship Group also includes Luis Esteban Torres Cobo (ADN), Diana Patricia Blacio Carrión (ADN), Jhajaira Estefanía Urresta Guzmán (Citizen Revolution), Camila Anahí Cueva Toro (ADN), Francisco Andrés Cevallos Macías (ADN), and Guillermo Vicente Báez Mera (Citizen Revolution).

The group’s composition reflects the participation of Ecuador’s two main political forces: the ruling ADN, with 66 seats, and the opposition Citizen Revolution (RC), which holds 67 seats in the 151-member unicameral parliament.

On this occasion, Morocco’s ambassador to Ecuador, based in Colombia, Farida Loudaya, stated that the establishment of this Friendship Group by Ecuador’s legislative body “accompanies the new momentum of rapprochement launched between the two countries since Ecuador suspended, on October 21, 2024, its recognition of the so-called ‘SADR’.”

The Moroccan diplomat also highlighted that this important initiative “builds on high-level diplomatic exchanges between Morocco and Ecuador, including the historic visit to Quito on May 24 by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, representing His Majesty King Mohammed VI at the inauguration of President Daniel Noboa—the first visit of its kind to the Ecuadorian capital.”

Loudaya also recalled the visit of Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld, to Rabat on July 4, marked by the inauguration of her country’s first embassy in Morocco—and the first in the Maghreb.

“This new space for consultation and dialogue will provide a privileged framework for exchange and shared reflection, bringing our legislative institutions closer together and strengthening bilateral parliamentary cooperation, in continuity with the dynamic already underway between the two friendly nations,” she added.
