Maroc : 270 M€ de la BAD pour moderniser les infrastructures aéroportuaires

This initiative aims to strengthen the competitiveness of Morocco’s air transport sector through the modernization of its main airport platforms, the AfDB said in a statement, noting that the program seeks to increase the operational capacity of the Kingdom’s airports by upgrading infrastructure, expanding the air navigation system, and reinforcing security mechanisms.

The program will help accommodate the projected growth in passenger and cargo traffic by 2030, particularly as Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

These investments will be complemented by the installation of next-generation security equipment, automated baggage-handling systems, and modern mobility devices, with the goal of offering a smoother, safer, and more comfortable travel experience.

“Further developing Morocco as a destination and strengthening its logistical competitiveness in preparation for a global event such as the 2030 FIFA World Cup remains our strategic priority,” said Achraf Hassan Tarsim, AfDB Country Office Manager in Morocco, as quoted in the statement.

The project includes the modernization of the airports of Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fez, involving the expansion of terminals, construction of a new control tower in Marrakech, and the development of 1.5 million square meters of aircraft parking areas and 7.6 kilometers of taxiways.

“This project will help drive Morocco’s tourism momentum and modernize its air logistics. In response to sustained air-traffic growth, it will modernize airport infrastructure to deliver a safe, efficient travel experience that meets international standards,” said Mike Salawou, Director of the AfDB Infrastructure and Urban Development Department.

This innovative program integrates various digitalization, fluidity, and comfort components aimed at transforming the travel experience in Morocco.

By 2030, the program will significantly increase the capacities of Morocco’s airports, with 14 million passengers in Marrakech, 5 million in Agadir, 3.6 million in Tangier, and 3 million in Fez.

These developments will further strengthen Morocco’s role as a regional air hub, the statement concluded.
