Thierry Henry Comments on AFCON 2025 Final, Highlights Tournament Success and Refereeing Challenges

On CBS Sports Golazo, Henry focused on the incident where Senegalese players briefly considered leaving the pitch following a late penalty decision. He described the action as inappropriate for players representing their countries.

“Leaving the field in that moment sends the wrong message,” Henry said. “It’s not the image you want to project for African football or football anywhere. Players have to maintain professionalism, even in difficult moments.”

Henry acknowledged the Senegalese team’s frustration, explaining that the controversy stemmed from differing perceptions of a key play in the final. He noted that Senegal believed a goal by Ismaïla Sarr should have stood before a penalty was awarded to Morocco.

“I understand why they felt upset,” Henry said, “but the way to respond is on the pitch, not off it.”

The former French international also commented on the broader challenges of refereeing in major African tournaments.

“AFCON referees are sometimes not at the level of the matches themselves,” he said. “Mistakes happen, and it’s up to the training and preparation of officials to match the level of football being played.”

He emphasized that his critique was directed at the systems that prepare referees, not the officials themselves.

Despite these issues, Henry praised the tournament overall, noting the quality of the matches and the celebrations that followed. He particularly highlighted Senegal’s efforts and the excitement generated by star players like Sadio Mané.

“The tournament was excellent. From the quarterfinals onward, it became even more intense. The African Cup of Nations continues to be a showcase for top-level football,” he said.

Henry’s reflections underline the dual nature of major football tournaments: thrilling athletic achievement paired with human and organizational challenges. His comments serve as both a reminder of the importance of preparation and professionalism in African football and a celebration of the continent’s growing impact on the global stage.
