Kickoff of “Morocco Days” in Montereau-Fault-Yonne

The town of Montereau-Fault-Yonne is celebrating Moroccan culture and traditions from Saturday, as part of the “Morocco Days” festival organized in this commune in the Seine-et-Marne department of the Île-de-France region.

The event, running until October 5, was inaugurated in the early afternoon by the Moroccan Ambassador to Paris, Samira Sitail, alongside James Cheron, Mayor of Montereau-Fault-Yonne and Vice-President of the Île-de-France region. The ceremony was attended by the presidents of the municipal councils of Dakhla and Safi, Erragheb Hormatollah and Iliass El Badaoui respectively, the Moroccan Consul General in Orly, Mohamad Hjiri, former minister and current Seine-et-Marne MP Jean-Louis Thieriot, and several Moroccan and French dignitaries, also marking the 20th anniversary of the twinning between Montereau and Safi.

At Parc des Noues, the city’s green heart, visitors were immersed in Morocco’s rich cultural, artisanal, and festive heritage, with nearly fifty artisans presenting leatherwork, ceramics, jewelry, zellige, embroidery, copperwork, and tapestry. The public also enjoyed a spectacular traditional cavalry performance of fantasia, alongside a vibrant showcase of Moroccan gastronomy, highlighting both local specialties and regional products.

For Mayor Cheron, the Morocco Days “are much more than a cultural event.” He told the press: “They reflect the vitality of the bonds between Montereau-Fault-Yonne and Safi and the deep friendship between France and the Kingdom.”

The festival also featured the renewal of the Twinning Oath with the city of Safi, signed by Messrs. El Badaoui and Cheron. The program, organized with support from the association Banlieues Santé, Al Omrane, and Attijari Wafa Bank, includes music concerts drawing from Chaâbi, Hassani, and Amazigh repertoires.
