Andrés Iniesta Reportedly Considered by FRMF for Role in Moroccan Football Project

According to several Spanish media outlets, including the sports dailies Sport and Marca, former Spanish football star Andrés Iniesta was reportedly considered for the position of Sporting Director of Morocco’s national teams as part of a broader reorganization of the technical leadership within the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).

This possibility comes amid a wider restructuring process undertaken by the governing body of Moroccan football. The FRMF recently announced the appointment of Mohamed Ouahbi as head coach of the Atlas Lions, replacing Walid Regragui, while also strengthening the technical staff with the arrival of Portuguese coach João Sacramento as the team’s main assistant.

Within this context, bringing in a globally recognized figure such as Iniesta would have aimed to add international expertise to Morocco’s sporting project. His potential role would have involved contributing to the performance development of the national team while strengthening coordination between the various national selections, training centers and football academies, as well as programs dedicated to women’s football.

However, according to information reported by the Spanish news agency EFE, negotiations between the former FC Barcelona midfielder and the FRMF have so far not reached a conclusion. Sources close to the matter indicate that an official statement announcing his arrival had even been prepared before discussions were ultimately suspended due to the absence of a final agreement.

Despite this temporary setback, the Moroccan federation is reportedly still interested in Iniesta’s profile, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures of modern football. Talks could therefore resume in the future if conditions evolve.

These developments come as Moroccan football continues its transformation under the leadership of FRMF president Fouzi Lekjaa, with the aim of consolidating the performances of the national teams and preparing for major international events, notably the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

For his part, newly appointed national team coach Mohamed Ouahbi stated in his first remarks that he intends to continue the work carried out in recent years with “humility, seriousness and patriotism,” in order to keep the Atlas Lions among the leading nations of world football and to further promote Morocco on the international stage.
