Rabat Gets a New Railway Station as “Rabat-Riad” Enters Service
After a long wait, the Rabat-Riad station officially welcomed its first passengers on Monday, December 15, marking a decisive step in the transformation of the capital’s transport network. Commissioned by the National Railways Office (ONCF), this new infrastructure is already emerging as a structuring element of urban and regional mobility in Rabat.

Built as part of the “Rabat, City of Lights” program, the station blends seamlessly into the urban fabric of the Hay Riad district. Developed on an area of approximately 35,000 square meters, it reflects the ambition to equip the capital with modern facilities in line with its demographic and economic growth.
Contemporary architecture serving the city
With its clean volumes, bold geometric lines and large glass surfaces, Rabat-Riad displays a resolutely contemporary architectural identity. The structure embodies a forward-looking urban vision in which functionality, aesthetics and sustainability come together to support the city’s expansion.
Designed as a bridge-station, the facility provides a direct connection between two major axes: Avenue Annakhil to the east, and Avenue Hassan II along with the Moulay Abdellah sports complex to the west. This configuration, a first in Rabat, facilitates pedestrian crossings, improves accessibility and contributes to smoother traffic flow for both users and motorists.
Relieving congestion and strengthening the rail network
The opening of Rabat-Riad complements the existing system alongside the Rabat-Agdal and Rabat-Ville stations, which are currently facing increasing traffic saturation. ONCF’s objective is clear: rebalance passenger flows, improve service coverage in the northern districts and enhance the overall performance of the rail network in a rapidly evolving metropolis.
The immediate commissioning of the station, combined with the activation of its dedicated online ticketing service, reflects the Office’s determination to ensure smooth, uninterrupted operations for passengers.
A multimodal hub with a structuring role
Beyond its function as a transit point, Rabat-Riad is designed as a true multimodal hub, intended to support the area’s urban dynamism. The infrastructure aims to efficiently connect administrative zones, residential neighborhoods and sports facilities, thereby contributing to a profound reorganization of daily mobility patterns.
From the first hours of operation, trains served the station at a controlled pace, while taxis and buses outside adjusted their routes. Large numbers of users quickly embraced the new facility, hailing it as essential for easing travel between Rabat, Salé, Témara and neighboring municipalities.
A new mobility pivot for the capital
Inaugurated with sobriety but amid steady footfall, the Rabat-Riad station is already asserting itself as a new major axis of urban mobility. It embodies Rabat’s determination to rethink transportation on the scale of a modern, connected capital looking firmly toward the future.
