High-Level Retreat on the Future of Euro-Mediterranean Relations Kicks Off: Under Morocco’s Impetus, the EU and Southern Mediterranean Countries Explore a Strengthened Partnership

The high-level retreat on the future of Euro-Mediterranean relations opened this Thursday morning in Rabat. The event is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, as part of Morocco’s historic commitment as a major actor in the Mediterranean region.

The opening session was co-chaired by Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, and Dubravka Šuica, Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of the Mediterranean.

This meeting brought together, for the first time, leading figures from the Euro-Mediterranean region, including senior government officials, international financial institutions, private sector representatives, as well as experts, researchers and think tanks from both the European Union and Southern Mediterranean countries.

Throughout the day, participants will take part in an in-depth strategic dialogue on the future of Euro-Mediterranean relations, particularly between the European Union and the Southern Mediterranean countries. These discussions carry special significance as they precede the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona Declaration and the launch of the Barcelona Process, scheduled for next November.

The main objective of this retreat is to conduct a comprehensive assessment of relations between the European Union and its southern partners, and to explore concrete avenues to strengthen cooperation on priority and strategic issues for both shores of the Mediterranean.

This unprecedented initiative reaffirms, once again, the Kingdom of Morocco’s firm commitment, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to fostering strong, integrated, and forward-looking regional cooperation.
