Morocco Attends Opening of UN General Assembly High-Level Debate in New York
New York - The General Debate of the 80th General Assembly opened Tuesday in New York, attended by heads of State and government, along with delegates from all 193 member states, including Morocco.

During this annual week-long event, Morocco’s delegation is headed by Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, following the High Instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, and is joined by Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita.
Themed “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights,” this session focuses on a wide range of current issues, including peace, sustainable development, and the climate crisis.
Speaking on the occasion, UN Secretary-General António Guterres noted that this general debate takes place amid a global context marked by numerous challenges that question the relevance of the United Nations and multilateral cooperation.
For him, this UN gathering is an opportunity to reaffirm commitment to the primacy of international law and the centrality of multilateralism, while strengthening justice and human rights. It is also a chance to reiterate collective adherence to the principles that guided the founding of the international organization 80 years ago.
In the same vein, UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock called for honoring the founding principles of the United Nations—peace, security, sustainable development, and human rights.
She emphasized that this commitment must be reflected through concrete actions and requires the involvement of all stakeholders, adding that through this collective push for multilateralism, the international community will be able to meet challenges and achieve the desired goals.
The high-level week features, in particular, two summits on climate and on a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient global economy, initiated by the UN Secretary-General, alongside meetings on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), and the promotion of mental health and well-being, and nuclear disarmament.
