Marrakech: World Power-to-X Summit Closes with Call to Build a Global Ecosystem Around Green Hydrogen
The 5th edition of the World Power-to-X Summit concluded Thursday in Marrakech with a strong call to establish a global ecosystem for green hydrogen and its derivatives, aimed at accelerating the global energy transition.
During the closing session, Ayoub Hirt, Head of the Green Chemistry Department at the Research Institute for Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN), stressed that “projects undertaken in this field must evolve into genuine ecosystems that generate skills, jobs, and sustainable competitiveness,” emphasizing the need for clear and stable regulatory frameworks to build investor confidence and support the development of strategic infrastructure such as ports, pipelines, and storage and certification systems.
Mr. Hirt noted that the large-scale deployment of green hydrogen projects requires unprecedented investment, calling in this regard to “quadruple” renewable energy capacity and develop innovative financial instruments, including contracts for difference and dual-option models, capable of reducing financing costs by 20 to 30 percent.
On the financial front, he highlighted the challenges linked to high costs and uncertain returns on investment, advocating blended finance approaches, public-private partnerships, and risk-sharing mechanisms to secure pilot projects, particularly in emerging markets.
At the national level, the speaker underlined the “considerable potential of green ammonia,” which he described as a matter of energy sovereignty and competitiveness requiring swift regulation and critical infrastructure investment, notably in smart grids, renewable desalination, pipeline transport, and carbon storage.
On the geopolitical aspect, Mr. Hirt affirmed that “the world energy map is undergoing a major transformation, and the strategic resources of tomorrow are no longer oil and gas, but rather wind, sun, and hydrogen.”
He concluded that Morocco, with its abundant renewable resources and pioneering initiatives, is steadily positioning itself as a future industrial hub in this sector.
Organized under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI by IRESEN, in partnership with Masen, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), and the Green H2 Cluster, the World Power-to-X Summit brought together leading policymakers, researchers, and industrialists.
This year’s edition, held under the theme “Together, Powering the Global Energy Transition”, served as an international platform for interregional cooperation, innovation, and the promotion of Morocco’s green hydrogen offer.
