Donald Trump claims the United States has begun “unblocking the Strait of Hormuz”

As peace talks open in Pakistan, Donald Trump claims that the US Navy has begun the process of reopening this strategic maritime route, despite denials from Tehran.

On Saturday, April 11, Donald Trump announced via his Truth Social platform that the United States had officially begun “the process of unblocking” the Strait of Hormuz. This operation, presented by the president as a “favor” granted to third countries such as China, Japan, France and Germany, aims to restore free navigation in waters that Washington considers international.

According to several US security sources cited by Axios and the Wall Street Journal, two US Navy guided-missile destroyers did in fact pass through the strait on Saturday. This military maneuver is intended to reassure commercial shipping, whose traffic has been almost completely halted due to Iranian activity since the beginning of the conflict. Donald Trump also lashed out at Iran, stating that the threat of naval mines belonged to the past, as almost the entire Iranian mine-laying fleet had, according to him, been sent “to the bottom of the sea” by recent US strikes.

In his Truth Social message, Donald Trump also attacked media outlets which, according to him, claim that Iran is winning the war against the United States, “while in reality everyone knows they are losing, and losing BIG”.

For its part, Iranian state television relayed statements from a senior military official firmly denying any passage of US warships through the strait. At the same time, maritime tracking services such as MarineTraffic currently only show a very limited resumption of traffic, restricted to a few dry cargo vessels, far from the full return to normal expected by energy markets.

This show of force comes as a high-level US delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff, has arrived in Islamabad, Pakistan, to begin peace negotiations with Tehran. The full and unconditional reopening of the strait is one of the central demands of the White House in order to sustain the two-week ceasefire agreed last Tuesday. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt firmly rejected any Iranian attempt to impose fees on vessels or require prior military coordination for passage.

Beyond maritime security, Donald Trump reiterated that the main objective of these negotiations remains the nuclear issue. “No nuclear weapon. That’s 99% of the deal,” he said before his team departed for Pakistan. Without providing details, the US president also claimed that “empty tankers from many countries are all heading to the United States of America to LOAD UP on oil.”
